Bradenton

Drive from St Pete across the amazing Sunshine Skyway (a bridge so high that even cruise ships can pass comfortably underneath!) and enter the ‘hidden Florida’ of Sarasota and Bradenton. This peaceful resort area boasts fantastic, white-sand beaches and a range of activities from kayak trails and fishing excursions to upmarket shopping and waterfront dining. Cultural attractions are also high on the agenda, with opera and art galleries being particularly popular.

St Pete Beach

Long a favourite haunt of sun-starved Brits, easy-going St Pete Beach offers a mix of budget and first-class beach hotels alongside some excellent, family-friendly attractions. Animal lovers will enjoy the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, where injured seabirds are nursed back to health. The beach itself is as splendid as you might expect but for something just that bit more exquisite, head to Fort De Soto State Park...

Treasure Island

This peaceful beach resort’s main claim to fame (aside from its white sandy beach of course!) is the eclectic boardwalk ‘village’ at John’s Pass. Here you’ll find a range of fun dining options and quirky shops alongside a multitude of fishing, watersports or sight-seeing excursions. Treasure Island is a very laid-back resort area, making it ideal for those needing quiet time to recover from the thrills and spills of Orlando!

New Port Richey

New Port Richey is most recognised for its cultural heritage and unique riverfront landscape. Offering the tranquility of nature and the warmth of Florida's Gulf beaches, with glistening waters perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving, boating and fishing. The nearby Cotee River, once a retreat for silent film-era movie stars, offers tours through its enchanting jungle areas, replete with alligators and parakeets.

Clearwater and Indian Rocks

The white sands of this ever-popular beach resort are so perfectly soft and sugar-fine, it actually squeaks when you walk over it! The resort has recently undergone something of a transformation, with new hotel developments giving the area a much more upmarket feel. Besides soaking up the year-round sunshine, daytime activities include jetski rental, dolphin-watching tours and kayaking in the mangroves, while daily sunset celebrations at Pier 60 are a perfect way to round off the day.

Fort Myers

A couple of hours drive from the bright lights of Orlando is Florida’s North Gulf Coast, a truly spectacular destination with miles and miles of golden sand and clear, blue waters kept clement by the almost constant sunshine. Indeed, some of the world’s finest beaches can be found here, including those at Clearwater and St Petersburg – or St Pete’s as the latter is now officially known. A natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts, there are water sports in abundance, beachcombing on quiet offshore islands, volleyball, horse riding, cycling and golfing. Don’t miss the Sunset Festival held every night at Clearwater’s Pier 90, it’s lots of fun for all the family. A few miles further down the coast is Indian Shores, a small, friendly beach community with a traditional Floridian atmosphere. As well as more of those lovely beaches, attractions include the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary – the USA’s largest wildlife hospital and a great place to acquaint yourself with the abundant birdlife that populates this area. There’s also a championship golf course and plenty of quiet spots where you can just soak up the sun. If you’re on a budget but don’t want to compromise on quality, Bradenton is ideal. Bordering the north tip of Sarasota, it has easy access to offshore Anna Maria Island, where acres of barely touched coastline awaits your discovery. Sarasota is much more lively with great shopping and fabulous restaurants. Kids fare pretty well here too with the Mote Marine Aquarium, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens and the Children’s Garden to tempt them. One common thread that runs through all South Gulf Coast beaches is their boundless beauty. From Fort Myers to Naples, natural wonders remain untouched and, although visitors flock here year after year, it’s always possible to find your very own slice of heaven! In Naples, Clam Pass County Park is perfect for seclusion seekers. If hiking appeals, head to Wiggins Pass State Park with its nature trails and observation tower. Naples is also home to the Caribbean Gardens, the oldest on the continent and packed to bursting with exotic flowers and animals. Just offshore is Marco Island, where relaxing on sun-washed beaches is the order of the day. During more active moments, shell-collecting is popular as is getting close to wildlife at one of several superb reserves. North of Naples is Bonita Springs, a small resort that’s big on charm with some of the best beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. There’s also extensive freshwater lakes and streams, so hire a boat and set sail. Golf courses and extensive shopping will please landlubbers as will a diverse selection of restaurants, most of which serve seafood fresh from the dock, including sweet scallops, jumbo shrimp and, of course, grouper! Further on up the coast is Fort Myers and Sanibel Island, with over 50 miles of shoreline to explore. Windsurfing, deep sea fishing, shelling cruises and island hopping are just some of the treats on offer. There’s also prehistoric Calusa Indian mounds to marvel at, the fascinating Williams Academy Black History Museum and Sanibel Historic Village, dedicated to early settlers of the island and offering an intriguing insight into their way of life. Captiva Island is little sister to Sanibel and easily reached via a small bridge that crosses at Turner’s Beach. Comb magnificent white sands for ‘treasures from the sea’, snorkel amidst colourful barrier reefs or hire a bike and cycle your way round. Alternatively, you could just grab yourself an ocean view seat in one of the island’s many restaurants and feast on gourmet food as the sun sets in the distance.
