Holiday Locations, San Francisco
San Francisco, the ‘City on the Bay’, offers the visitor many diverse and interesting districts in a relatively compact area – making exploring this great city easy and fun! From the bustle of Chinatown to the designer shopping in Union Square, the fabulous restaurants to the character of Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco will capture your heart too! Not to be missed is a trip to Alcatraz and the stunning views from Golden Gate National Park.
San Francisco has to be the start point for any visit to California; a beautiful city in a pretty location, surrounded by a wealth of visiting opportunity. The City by the Bay is rich in cultural diversity, too, from the biggest Chinatown in the western world to Alcatraz, the fearsome former prison island now open to fascinated day-trippers. In between, you can hop on the famous scenic Cable Cars, ride the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (a state-of-the-art metro system that makes London’s Underground look positively archaic) or just let your feet provide the transport around one of America’s most pedestrian-friendly cities. Then, of course, you have that classic tourist icon in the Golden Gate Bridge, crossing which takes you north into California wine country – and the chance to tantalise your tastebuds with some serious vintages.
San Francisco Highlights
- Ride one of the famous San Francisco cable cars that you have no doubt seen in the movies! A real bonus of the CityPass is 7 days of unlimited rides on the cable cars.
- One of the cable car stops is Lombard Street. Known as the world’s most crooked street, there is an amazing view from the top. Feel free to descend the stairs, but be warned you will have to climb them again to rejoin the cable car!
- The Golden Gate Bridge is arguably the city’s most famous land mark. Our deluxe city tour includes a drive across the bridge, and then stops at Vista Point (be sure to have your camera ready!) The bridge can also be walked across (no charge). Our advice is to take some warm clothing with you as the winds across the bridge can make the temperature much cooler than the city centre.
Situated in San Francisco Bay is the island of Alcatraz. “The Rock” as it is
known was home to America’s most notorious criminals. Although the prisoners have long since left the Island has a great
story to tell and is definitely worth a visit. Please note Alcatraz limits the number of visitors each day – we strongly recommend our
Deluxe City Tour with Alcatraz to pre-book your place.- Fisherman’s Wharf is full of attractions, restaurants and bars. Pier 39 is certainly worth a stroll down to explore the wide variety of interesting shops. The Pier also offers excellent views of some of the Wharf’s more famous residents; a colony of sealions.
- Union Square offers some fantastic shopping with many famous names stores. To help you on your way Travel City Direct will include a Macy’s International Shoppers Discount card with your tickets!
- The “Cheesecake Factory” is located in Macy’s, and offers some scrumptious food! Treat yourself, as afterwards you can walk off the calories by exploring nearby Chinatown.
