Whatever you may have seen or heard of Las Vegas in advance - through TV and recent films like Oceans 11 and The Cooler - none of it prepares you for the reality (or, more properly, the unreality) of this city built on gambling.
You may think you've seen casinos before but, until you've experienced the full-on, no-holds-barred glitz and glamour that is Vegas, quite simply, you ain't seen nothing yet. In a city where clocks are forbidden (you can't have punters knowing what time of day it is, they might heaven forbid! - go to bed), the slot machine is King (closely followed by the roulette wheel and the craps table).

- Las Vegas must be one of the few places in the world where the hotels are major attractions. Put time aside to see magnificently themed venues such as The Luxor, the Venetian (where the weather actually changes indoors!) and the Aladdin.
- For stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip journey up to the top of the Stratosphere (don't forget your camera!). Thrill seekers who want to enjoy more than the view can experience daredevil rides on top of the tallest building west of the Mississippi.
- Be sure to check out the great water displays in the fountain outside of the Bellagio. Every 15 minutes a performance starts synchronised to music.
- In a city built on gambling try your luck in a casino, or alternatively sit back and watch the high-rollers in action. Many of the casinos offer free introductory lessons to the many games on offer.
- Located in Downtown Las Vegas you will find Fremont Street. In this undercover street enjoy a spectacular nightly laser show.
